Wings of Poetry, Journey of Books ——Grade 8 Chinese Department’s International Children’s Book Day Poetry Event

April 11, 2025

To celebrate International Children’s Book Day, the Grade 8 Chinese Department launched the themed event "Wings of Poetry" in the first-floor library of the Hsi Building. Breaking away from traditional reading activities, this event engaged all students through immersive, interactive poetry creation and literary exploration, aiming to help students unleash the wings of imagination and embrace a poetic youth, crafting a youthful feast blending literature and ceremony.

In My Name—A Poem for You

During the "In My Name—A Poem for You" session, students wandered through a treasure trove of acrostic poems, joyfully discovering verses embedded with their own names. These poems, written by classmates as graduation blessings during modern poetry workshops, formed a "name cipher library." Students who found their names then signed them on a communal whiteboard, which gradually evolved into a dynamically evolving "collective poem" composed of everyone’s signatures.

Poetic Mosaic

A collage poetry exhibition and competition unfolded in the library. Students breathed new life into "forgotten" words by deconstructing and reassembling fragmented texts, turning broken pages into a romantic, therapeutic literary process. All artworks were credited to their creators, and an interactive voting session allowed participants to support their favorites by attaching star stickers. The collage poems formed a unique "stellar trajectory," and the poet with the most stars won a surprise prize—a ticket to the grade’s House Reading Party!

Ciphers in Poetry
Teachers hid "poetic clues" among the library shelves. Beneath recommended poetry books, students embarked on reading journeys, using custom poetry collection cards and UV light pens to capture beloved verses from the texts. Participants could either tuck their poem cards back into the books for future "treasure hunters" or hide them in creative corners like windowsills, transforming the space into a flowing poetry station—a shared celebration of literary beauty.

Hidden Poetic Pacts
As the event concluded, teachers invited students to borrow books, each revealing hidden poetic surprises. Handwritten graduation bookmarks, carrying heartfelt wishes, were tucked into the pages. Students not only took home a book but also a token of their teachers’ blessings. These keepsakes will serve as gentle anchors, turning special moments of growth into folded corners in the book of youth, able to reconnect students with cherished memories with a simple flip.

This graduation ceremony, bridging literary creation and deep reading, etched poetic imprints into the students’ youth while awakening their linguistic sensitivity and creative flair. On International Children’s Book Day, the event inspired children to read, reflect, and embrace the beauty and poetry of life. By reconnecting literature with experience and creativity, teachers and students together celebrated the truth that every child is born a poet.
