Middle School/High School Biology Department: Bridging Education Across Grades to Build a New Environment for Teaching

April 21, 2025

To promote effective connection between middle-school and high-school biology education, on April 18, the Middle School and High School Biology Departments held an education-based exchange activity. The event included three activities: course sharing, teaching discussions, and a visit of the Hsi Building.

During the course sharing session, Ms. Gu Ying, head teacher of the High School Biology Department, introduced the high school curriculum, characteristic club activities and the training system for subject competitions. She explained the course contents, ability training and evaluation methods of different curriculum systems. The biology scientific research activities in high-school grades were also shared. Ms. Du Jia’ni, head of the Middle School Biology Department, systematically explained the curriculum framework for middle-school grades, showcased the outcomes of elective courses and introduced the functional areas and features of the Hsi Building. After that, the teachers engaged in in-depth discussions about the course teaching system and subject-specific activities.

The tour of the Hsi Building was a highlight of the event. This modern building is designed with laboratories for molecular and cellular biology, physiological medicine, entomology, microbiology, cell and tissue culture, food science, and plant physiology, equipped with advanced experimental instruments such as laser confocal microscopes, PCR machines, in vivo imaging system, high-speed centrifuges, etc. Many teachers expressed that the advanced experimental conditions can not only support regular experimental teaching but also provide strong technical support for students to conduct scientific research projects. Middle school students will be able to use these instruments under the guidance of professional teachers. Teachers of high-school grades felt it would significantly enhance students' research capabilities, laying a solid foundation for more in-depth and professional scientific exploration. Finally, the teachers engaged in lively discussions about the continuity of experimental courses and inter-grade project collaboration, reaching a consensus on the intention to jointly develop and utilize experimental course resources.

This activity established a communication platform for biology teachers from middle school and high school, laying the foundation for a systematic biology curriculum. All teachers agreed that through continued deepening cooperation and joint efforts to facilitate the connection between biology learning of different learning phases, the overall quality of biology teaching of SHSID will be significantly improved, thereby establishing a solid foundation for cultivating internationally competitive biology talents.
