2025 Shanghai High School Students' "Performance Season"
Overview of the Performance Season
In order to enhance the comprehensive artistic quality of students, to create an elegant and rich campus art atmosphere, highlighting the nature and characteristics of the art (music) discipline, the Music and Drama Center in 2019 onwards, every year from late May to early June to hold a large-scale “Student Performance Season” activities. The activity launched vocal, instrumental, dance, drama, original music and so on about ten special series of performances, each session of nearly a thousand participating students, and has become an effective way to show the results of Shanghai high school art education teaching and an important period of time.
The Performance Season’s Purpose
The purpose of the Performance Season is to create a high-level, pre-professional platform for students to improve their artistic expression, stimulate their potential, cultivate their artistic accomplishments in a comprehensive manner and to realize effectively the links between the classroom and the outside world.
The Distinguishing Features of Its Specific Contents and Their Implementation
Unlike a traditional arts festival, the Performance Season distinguishes itself in both form and structure. Its design philosophy aligns more closely with that of professional arts academies, while its organizational model draws inspiration from formal theatrical productions. It encompasses a wide range of specialized concerts and stage performances—including vocal, dance, wind ensemble, string ensemble, original music, drama, piano, and the L2D musical production—offering over a dozen uniquely curated events. Together, they highlight the professional depth of our arts curriculum and the high caliber of our arts education.
Introduction to Each Session
The original music showcase expresses emotions through melody, captures life through sound, and expands the boundaries of expression through technology. Breakthroughs in advertising music design, cross-genre fusion of piano and traditional Chinese instruments, the sacred timbre of the pipe organ, the integration of AI technology, and the live performance of the theremin all reflect a diverse exploration of sound and image co-creation, bringing a strong sense of experimentation and futurism to the event.
The piano recital will be passionately presented by ten students who have won awards in city and district-level competitions. These young pianists will interpret a dialogue between the classical and the contemporary with remarkable skill, turning the stage of the Drama Theatre into a musical prism that transcends time and space.
The wind ensemble will traverse time and space with majestic music, where the grandeur of foreign civilizations meets the profound charm of Eastern melodies. Their performance showcases not only technical mastery but also a deep understanding of music, as they use the stage to reflect on fifteen years of growth and artistic dedication.
The drama showcase emphasizes reinterpreting classics through fresh perspectives and innovative techniques. From the emotional retelling of The Butterfly Lovers, the philosophical depth of Shakespearean drama, and the bilingual expression of Broadway musicals, to the vibrant storytelling of The Legend of Nezha, the performances are rich and varied—highlighting the dynamic intersection of diverse cultures.
The vocal recital fully embodies the fusion of diverse cultures—where the poetry of European folk songs, the fiery rhythms of South America, and the spiritual resonance of Eastern melodies intertwine and collide. This cross-cultural musical dialogue transcends time and space, creating an immersive audiovisual experience.
The dance showcase highlights a diversity of styles and innovative choreography. From the graceful fluidity of ballet, the subtle elegance of Chinese classical dance, to the vibrant colors of folk dance and the dynamic energy of contemporary styles, each performance reflects exquisite technique and seamless coordination. Together, they portray the dancers’ artistic growth and transformation.
The string ensemble continues to navigate between the classical and the contemporary, featuring romantic masterpieces by Tchaikovsky, groundbreaking works from Japanese avant-garde composers, and innovative reinterpretations by contemporary artists. With immersive performance design, the concert invites the audience to experience the wonder and subtle beauty of music woven through strings.
