Academic Competition: AMC8/10/12 American Math Competition Series Award-Winning News

April 18, 2023

The American Mathematics Competition in the 2022 academic year has come to an end, turning out excellent results from both the primary and middle school sections of SHSID.

In 1950, the American High School Mathematics Examination(AHSME) was established by the MAA for high school students. In 1985, the association further created the American Junior High School Mathematics Examination (AJHSME) and AMC series including the AMC 8, 10, 12, AIME, USA (J) MO, and MOP. Those competitions would then culminate in the International Mathematical Olympiad. The AMC competitions provide a platform allowing talented and passionate students to showcase their abilities to a broader audience. Furthermore, students are able to absorb the varied cultural attitudes towards mathematics. As of this year, more than 300,000 students have participated in the AMC competitions, and many more will soon follow.

In the 2022 academic year, our primary and middle school students received nine High Distinction titles in AMC 8 (Top 1%) and forty-four AMC 8 Distinction titles (Top 5%). Adding on, seven students reached the AMC 10A cutoff and three received Distinction; two students passed the AMC 10B cutoff and one received Distinction. Two students also received Distinction for AMC 12A. In particular, an eighth grader from middle school section obtained an excellent score of 138 points, reaching the AMC 12 Honor Roll of Distinction. A second grader in primary school section also achieved excellent results in the AMC competitions.

We believe that students will learn more and achieve more from those experiences, and improve themselves to be better independent learners.
