Middle School Section Pi Day Carnival: Let’s “Paity”!
Pi Day Carnival has finally arrived! The teachers in the middle school section have brought the students together and planned out an exciting Pi Day activity. On Thursday afternoon, the students of G6-7 gathered together to experience the mystifying magic of Math.
In the Zhongxing Building, students and teachers have designed each classroom to have its own unique, math-related activity, including Math Treasure Hunt, Sudoku, Mental Math Magic and many else. It involves a variety of mathematical abilities such as logical thinking, response speed, operations, analytical reasoning, etc.
Each student was given an activity passport, and they could earn stamps by completing each game. Afterwards, the top 8 students of each class who got the most amount of stamps would receive prizes, and the first placer would earn a delicious apple pie, a mystery box, a cardholder, and other interesting prizes.
A highlight of this year’s carnival wss that 7(10) Ingemar and 6(11) Daniel had collaborated in an original piano event. They assigned the numbers 0-9 to different piano keys and had used the value of Pi to spin out and composed a wonderful, sweet melody.
In Zhentao Building, with all the teachers and students planning, each 8th-grade class created their unique activities as well. There were skill-based math games such as Sudoku to fill in numbers from 1-9, Lucky 13, Big Seed, Waldo, Rummikub, and Gomoku; activities to test reflexes such as Musical Chairs and 24 Points; observational challenges such as Maze to find the exit, One Touch Drawing, move the matches, and Jenga. Each class, after planning and discussing on their own for several classes, successfully arranged a wonderful carnival..
All the activities were divided into different levels from "easy" to "hard", giving participants plenty of options. Students got the chance to witness how mathematics, which they often perceive as equations, functions, and algebra, could be incorporated, and represented as numerous fun and instructive activities.
Of all the activities, there were well-known classics and new ones that were not so familiar to everyone, but all were willing to try Even if some students failed their first attempt in the game, they were still eager to try again and overcame the challenges. All students were motivated to explore every homeroom and opportunity to show their capabilities. They actively participated and attended each activity while gathering as many stamps as possible to earn top prizes and won honors for their homeroom. There were also a few helpers who volunteered to stay in their homerooms and helped with stamping and keeping order.
Time flied when you were having fun, and there had been many students who were unwilling to leave. However, Pi is not the only interesting aspect of Math, and this marvelous subject can be celebrated any day. As the day was ending, though, it was astounding to see how this carnival allowed students to see the curious magic of Math!
