Middle School Chinese Department: “Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival and Children’s Day” —G7 Chinese Non-native Chinese Theme Activities

June 7, 2022

Here comes the beginning of June. Followed by Children’s Day, we ushered in the Dragon Boat Festival. Last week, a series of activities with the theme of “Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival and Children’s Day” was organized by the G7 non-native Chinese group. The activity series was designed to cover three parts: Cloud Works Exhibition, Cloud Dragon Boat Race, and Cloud Challenge Race, with the aim of promoting traditional Chinese culture, further making students perceive the cultural connotation of traditional festivals. Meanwhile, it enabled children to celebrate Children’s Day together and share the joy of festivals.

Days before the online gathering activity, the teachers of the non-native Chinese group carefully prepared a variety of online activities and tasks, such as “How much do you know about Dragon Boat Festival,” etc., to enable the students to learn the relevant knowledge of Chinese traditional festivals in advance, which lays a good foundation for the following activities. In order to further enhance students’ Chinese language proficiency, they were asked to complete various tasks such as an interview, recitation, singing, and painting; consequently, their Chinese cultural knowledge base was also enriched finally.

Cloud Works Exhibition

On the basis of collecting related works, we launched the activity of Cloud Works Exhibition. Students could enjoy each other’s amazing works well. There are rich interviews, carefully designed cards, and eloquent recitations... Every child appreciated each other’s works happily and cast a vote of appreciation for their own favorite works. In this part, students’ spiritual distance was narrowed via work appreciation and interaction. Although they are staying in different places, they can immerse themselves in each other’s holiday blessings through the screen.

Cloud Dragon Boat Race

After the works display was over, we came to the exciting part of Cloud Dragon Boat Race. Before embarking on the main activity, there were two warm-up practices: “How much do you know about Dragon Boat Festival words” and “Enjoy Zongzi within a limited time,” aiming to help students review their knowledge about Dragon Boat Festival. Then, the students were divided into five dragon boat teams based on their classes, and each team took turns to answer the questions displayed on the screen. The team who answered the questions correctly moved forward, while the teams who got tripped up on the questions could only stay still where they were. In this process, the students were all in high spirits for the competition, and everyone spoke out their own answers aloud to strive to be the winners, which aroused the students’ enthusiasm for participating in the activities, and even allowed the children to use their brains and master more knowledge about Dragon Boat Festival in a limited time.

Cloud Challenge Race

Following the dragon boat race was Cloud Challenge Race in the Cloud, which offered students one more chance to take on the challenges. Five sets of questions were designed in the competition, in which the champion team of the dragon boat race was regarded as the champion, and other teams would draw questions to challenge the champion. They would become the final winners once they answered all the questions correctly. Everyone was eager to try this part, and every class actively participate in the challenge, hoping to get the opportunity of winning and changing the situation. Everyone thought about topics and gained knowledge in a cheerful and harmonious atmosphere, which also drew a successful conclusion to this activity series.

Such activities are of great significance because they enable the students to not only grasp knowledge about Dragon Boat Festival but also immerse themselves in the happy atmosphere of Children’s Day and further appreciate the charm of traditional Chinese culture.
