Grades 1-3: Math Week "Have Fun in Math Wonderland!"

November 30, 2021

From November 22nd to November 26th,students welcomed the annual Math Week in the primary section. Every math class was transformed into a gateway to the math wonderland, where grades one to three students tried their best and had fun.

First grade’s math week was initiated during Thanksgiving week. Students completed Turkey Fact Family worksheets and Turkey Number Line worksheets. Grade one students, who have been learning how to use their iPads, used many kinds of shapes to make Thanksgiving items on the Geoboard. In the 2D world, the items on Thanksgiving Day also look very attractive! On Thursday, students made little tin soldiers with mathematical graphics. They selected the graphics and separated and spliced them into tin soldiers. On the last day of Math Week, students solved problems and sought clues to unlock Thanksgiving. There were many math problems hidden on each feather of a little turkey. The students geared up one by one, trying their best to overcome every problem. Finally, with their help, the little turkey had its colorful wings.

The second-grade students explored Math Wonderland with a little monster, Mathie. They experienced how Math is connected to Music, Science, PE, and Art. Once they entered the castle in the wonderland, they met the Knave of Hearts. In order to leave the castle safely, they needed to solve the math problem on the Poker Cards. The answer to the key is something that students can take pictures with. For example, windows, bookshelf, whiteboard, and football. After leaving the castle, students visited the magic fountain, where they learned some music theory about fractions. On the third day, students landed on an island in the wonderland, and they met the robot there. They joined the Robot Factory and worked together to build different robots. Divided into different groups, they made cranes, aircraft, and many other interesting robots. Right after students left the factory, a fairy came and asked for help. Fairies in the wonderland were asked to collect some pictures with math elements. To help them, the grade two students needed to use their bodies to make different math symbols or numbers and take pictures with their iPads. On the last day, students looked back on their amazing journey in the Math Wonderland. They decorated the posters with photos and reflected on this math journey. They enjoyed Math Week!

The third-grade students turned into anti-epidemic heroes to support five different cities to vaccinate local residents. Five little heroes used their wisdom to solve math puzzles to obtain the location of the city, population, relief supplies, and other information on the first day. The cooperation was fully reflected in the team logo design and construction on the second day. The logos, built with Lego pieces were very creative. In the third day’s activities, the little heroes need to negotiate and allocate each person’s daily workload and choose the best flight to arrive in the city. The spirit of teamwork and making smart choices, which are the essential elements of an excellent team begin to sprout and grow in every student’s heart. The next two days were the results reporting stage. To fight against the epidemic, most of the residents in the city had been successfully vaccinated. By drawing a bar graph, the students reported the number of people vaccinated in five cities; by drawing a line graph, they found that with their efforts, the number of people infected was declining. At the same time, the “little heroes” also watched a documentary on the fight against COVID-19. They were moved by medical workers, who worked day and night to save people’s lives, and were excited for the unity of the people. These little heroes expressed their thought that they will contribute to the world when they grow up!

The math week ended successfully with laughter. We hope that the children will not only feel the charm of math but also learn to use math to change our lives and the world.
