Grade 8: A Letter to Your Future Self

October 30, 2020

During YD class on October 29th, the eighth graders of SHSID were tasked with writing a letter to their future selves! When students heard the topic, many were confused and failed to see the benefits such reflective practice can bring. However, they soon realized that the class was more intriguing than they had originally thought.

The class began with a video recording of the essay “Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen.” The essay suggests readers keep an open mindset and share their experience from growing up; students taking advice from adults can facilitate growth and appreciation for their youth.

After watching the film, students discussed quotes that were meaningful to them. Then, teachers gave an overview of the writing assignment: students were to write a letter to their future selves, and the letters will be kept by the teachers until Middle School Graduation Day. Upon graduation, the letters will be returned to the students.

The purpose of the activity was for students to reflect on themselves and explore their opinions on issues and their future opportunities. To help students draw inspiration, teachers played videos of former graduates reflecting on this activity.

Finally, it was time for the eighth graders to write their letters! Students recorded their thoughts on a variety of topics, including their pets, dreams, goals, service-learning groups, and the upcoming midterms.

They watched excitedly as their letters were put into envelopes and sealed, waiting to be opened at the end of eighth grade.

In this YD class, students had opportunities to think about their current selves. The task provided an opportunity for students to cultivate higher-order thinking through self-reflection. Let us all look forward to Graduation Day together!
