Grade 8: Students Achieved Excellent Results in the British Physics Olympiad
In the afternoon of May 9th, the results of the British Physics Olympiad were finally released on the ASDAN official account. A group of people had already been waiting for their scores for what felt like centuries. BPhO is a well-known international competition, and it is divided into two levels, GCSE and AS. This time, the eighth graders from SHSID took the GCSE level test, which is aimed for ninth and tenth grades. This indeed was a great challenge for them.
In October last year, eight physics lovers from grade 8 gathered and committed to participating in the BPhO competition. They forfeited their weekly optional class and chose to study extra physics. They discussed and practiced momentum, pressure, wave, electromagnetism, and other topics. They have learned a lot of new knowledge for sure. To them, it was not a tedious, stressful class; instead, it was a chance for them to think like physicists. Under the guidance of Ms. Jin, they had not only explored some concepts that were not involved in regular physics classes, but also had tons of laughter in class.
The outbreak of COVID-19 was not on the schedule. These students followed the organizer’s instructions and prepared for the upcoming online contest. Even though there were a lot of technical issues on March 15th, competition day, they still finished the test with patience and carefulness. There were three sections in total; the paper incorporated multiple choice questions, short answer questions, and calculation questions to test the contestant’s physics knowledge.
After two months of waiting, the results were finally out. Though the list of prize-winners seemed 10-kilometers long, the students saw the name of SHSID without much effort. They all did a great job. Tony and Amy from class 8(1), Ethan from class 8(2), Maxwell and Ryogo from class 8(3), and Leo and Gavin from class 8(8) got gold awards, and Alyna from class 8(7) got a silver award. This was beyond their and Ms. Jin’s expectation.
From their test preparations, these eight students have learned a lot beyond the beauty of physics and the joy of studying physics. They were able to further develop their independent learning skills throughout the semester. Their feats and happiness were the best evidence of this.
