Good News from 2019-2020 USAD China

April 14, 2020

The 2019-2020 United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) China ended on April 12th. The two teams of SHSID students from Grade 9 and 10 managed to carry home 8 bronze, 7 silver, and 10 gold medals. The two teams came in 1st place and 6th place, respectively. SHSID has been awarded “Outstanding Achievement Award” because of its excellent performances for 5 consecutive years. Their coach, Ms. Yiwei He, was awarded the “Distinguished Services Award for Coaching.”

The USAD is a prestigious academic competition. Each team is made up of 6 to 9 students coming from three groups: Honor, Scholastic and Varsity. The competition has ten subjects: essay, art, literature, music, math, science, social science, interview, speech, and economics. Decathletes must excel in not one but all of these subjects to achieve high scores. Only six scores per team are counted for the team ranking, coming from the top 2 Honor decathletes, top 2 Scholastic decathletes, and top 2 Varsity decathletes.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the USAD China Organizing Committee changed the original offline competition in February to an online test in April. The 2020 topic is “In sickness and in health: an exploration of illness and wellness”. This topic became more meaningful in the current worldwide situation. This competition not only examined students’ knowledge, but also enabled them to acquire new learning and problem-solving skills for the uncertain future.
