Grade 9: Online Assembly(3)

April 8, 2020

On April 3rd, Harrison from 9 (1) gave an Assembly presentation to the entire grade, explaining the importance of sleep and giving some suggestions to improve sleep efficiency. He pointed out that today, many students face a serious problem—sleep deprivation. This is because students often stay up late for recreation and study and even pull all-nighters for big events. However, sleep is essential in life. After studying the mechanisms of sleep, Harrison found that blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulate in the brain during sleep, cleaning up harmful byproducts of daily activities in order to improve the brain's efficiency for the next day. If you don't get enough sleep, harmful substances can cause more and more damage to the brain. In the short run, people who are sleep deprived can become very tired and lose their concentration and productiveness. In the long run, the effects are more severe: people who don't get enough sleep are at an increased risk for a variety of health problems, including diabetes, stress, obesity, high blood pressure, anxiety, cognitive impairment, and depression.

After talking to students about the importance of sleep, Harrison offered some suggestions for improving sleep quality:

1. Pay attention to what you eat before bed. Don't sleep with a full or empty stomach, since either will keep you awake. Don't take in stimulants such as coffee or tea.

2. Calm yourself down before going to bed. Forget about the frustrating events that happened during the day and try to empty your mind.

3. Create a comfortable and quiet sleeping environment. Try to keep your sleep environment relatively dark. Turning a blue light on may help you fall asleep faster because the hypothalamus is more sensitive to blue light. Don't keep the light on all night though, because radiation from electronic devices can interfere with brain waves produced during sleep.

Finally, Harrison mentioned that sleep is good for the body and can significantly improve work efficiency. Therefore, keeping the right amount of sleep is crucial, since sleep can give us good energy to greet each new day.
