April 6, 2020

Do you knowthe Giving Tree? It is a unique Christmas tree thatmakespeople’s dreams and wishes come true. A little girl called Jin Jiya picked a wish card from the Christmas giving tree, and thenshe senta dolltoa girl she didn’t know. But the money was supposed to be used to buy her familygifts. Generally, during Christmas,we receive gifts from ourlovedones. However, through the Giving tree, we can sendagift toanyoneto express our love and care andhelpthemrealize their dreams.

In the gradethree online native Chinese classes, our students were impressedby this story andthe goodness ofJin Jiya’s heart. They learned thatgiving and sharingdecorateour lives with love and hope.Since March 23,thestudents had beenworking on ameaningful groupproject:creatinga “Giving Love, Passing Love” micro moviewith Keynote. ByApril 3, every class has finished their movie-making contest, and the best movies have been displayedon the LCplatform.

The combination of online and offline work contributed to the successof this project:the students actively participatedin the discussion online, and, at the same time, theyworked independentlyoffline to finish their part. Students presented their ideas for thescripts and movie editing on Keynote, and they also listened to other team members’points of views. Through this movie-making project, studentswere able todevelop goodteamwork skills and understand the importance of teamwork. Many parents and students said that this project allowed them to improve their writing and Keynote skills and, more essentially, developa deepunderstanding of the important role love andgiving playduring this hardtime.

Although challenging,2020 has provided students the opportunity to better understandhow to give to other people. Their micro moviestoldstories about theeverydaylives andkindness of people—doctors and nurses who saved patients’lives, deliverymen who sent basic necessities to peopledespite the terrible weather, and taxi drivers that offered free pick-up and drop-off services. As the scripts said, love has wings and flies all over the world. We hope that we can pass on “giving and love” to more and more people.
