Grade 2 Chinese Department: Congratulations! You’ve Received a Gift from Mom and Dad
From March 23rd to March 27th, Puxi second gradersin the native Chinese class had beenworking on a specialproject:The Story of My Name.
In this project, students need to understand the shape and meaning of Chinese characters to explore the expectations behind their names that will accompany them throughout their lives.
“My family name is a country in ancient times. “
“My ancestor is a great general who had fantastic achievements!” ...
Children who originally thought that their last name was just a normal characterfound out that each character is full of cultural heritage that spans thousands of years, after they searchedfor the stories of their name.Thelast name is the origin of the family. How about the first name?
“Mom hopes you can become a warm and enthusiastic person like the sun”, so “昊”appears in his name;
“Dad hopes that I canthinkmore”, so there is “思” in the name ...
The children knew the story of their name during the explorationand drew the totem based on their name. On the last day of the project, the children introduced their totems and the stories in a video to the classmates and teachers.
How can we make the connection between parents, children and teachers during the teaching and learning process?
Understanding the Chinese characters included in their name, the children opened the “arbitrary door” to the day of their birthand also opened the door to themselves and their parents. On this fantastic journey of loving names, the children proudly discovered that they had received the best gift from their family in the world long before they were born.
