Grade 2: Traveling with Mary Pope Osborne

April 2, 2020

March 23 to March 27 is the annual Author’s Week of the primary section. Grade 2 students had an activity to see which class can read the most books. Grade 1 chose Dr. Seuss books to explore. Let's take a look at which author's books the grade 2 students have read together.

The 2nd grade English teachers decided to focus on Mary Pope Osborne, the author of the popular Magic Tree House series. The books she has written are loved by many and inspire kids to enjoy reading. These books transport children into their imagination and help them learndifferent places and times in history.

Seven classes in Grade 2participated in the reading week competition, which enhanced students’interestsin reading. Second graders also had the option to create a book review so they could discuss which book is their favorite and why. Although the children could not communicate in person with their classmates inthis difficult time, the readingsparked their imaginations and connectedthem. Teachers and students dressed up during the Zoom meeting. They put on clothes of theirfavorite characters in the book andimitated their actions. When the characters in the book actually "appeared" in life, their personalitiesand ideas began to affect children. Over the course of the week, hundreds of books were read in each class, and the studentswere able to travel to lots of places and times!

Author’sweek has already done, but for kids, their reading trip continues. The teachers hope that children can keep exploring the world by reading!
