Grade 9: Freshman Project

April 1, 2020

The Freshman Project in grade 9 is a chance for students to use the accumulated skills and knowledge they have gleaned from all their studies at SHSID. This is a group activity, and students will spend the year developing their own unique answer to the guiding question: Who are we at SHSID? Each group must attempt to demonstrate an awareness of a given facet of their community. Students can define the SHSID community in terms of nationality, their classmates, the city they live in, the friends they have, being a generation connected via internet, their “fandoms,” the varsity teams they love, or in other ways. The project members can study a given cultural artifact, like Chinese tea; or address a problem we all encounter such as how to develop a healthy diet. Students could even research something more abstract like what they love.

In the fourth week of this semester, all the students in each class were divided into groups through Zoom, WeChat, or other online communication methods. Each group determined their research topic and the subject direction each student is responsible for.
