Grade 1: Author’s Week — Explore the Worlds of Dr. Seuss!

March 31, 2020

All the primary students at SHSID have read a lot despite the spread of the virus that kept them at home. For our Author’s week, the primary students of Puxi Campus had so much fun reading a lot of great books and find out about many great authors.

Our first graders spent a week reading the classic works of Dr. Seuss online under the guidance of their English teachers. One of Dr. Seuss' classics isCat in a Hat. The students were amused by that weird funny cat and were inspired to design all kinds of weird hats of their own. They also made handmade works to salute Dr. Seuss, the master of children’s books! During the Zoom class meeting, the first graders wore their own creative hats and scrambled eggs to share their feelings about reading Dr. Seuss books during the Reading Week.

Dr. Seuss created a pair of blue-haired twin elves called Thing 1 and Thing 2, who sparked the creativity of all students. Many first graders were dressed as twins with their own friends. Dr. Seuss'Green Eggs and Hamis also a very educational book. He tells the children the truth, in an exaggerated and entertaining way, that if you are brave enough to try, you may get unexpected surprises! After reading the book, the first graders tried to make their own green eggs and ham with various ingredients such as matcha and spinach juice!

Our teachers designed many English spelling, writing and other exercises related to Dr. Seuss' works. Children were engaged in an interesting writing activity where they put their imaginations to the test writing about parts from Dr. Seuss’ stories to create their own. Also, they practiced saying many silly tongue twisters with their teacher. They really enjoyed learning in a happy atmosphere, making learning and reading extremely fun.

A week is too short for reading! The teachers believe that through this week's rich and enjoyable reading experiences, children will develop good reading habits and read more excellent books in the future.
