Middle School Biology Department: Transforming Teaching and Learning
Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, all the schools across the country have postponed the start of the new semester. In response to the direction of the Ministry of Education on “Combating the Epidemic, Suspension of Schools but Not of Learning”, all the teachers in the middle school biology department were actively engaged in preparing online courses and came up with a lot of great ideas and solutions in the brainstorm meeting. Based on the characteristics of biology, the teachers made the online teaching guidelines clear and then organized diverse online learning activities.
Results-Oriented, Rejecting the Exact Copy of Offline Teaching
In order to ensure that students meet the learning outcomes, teachers prepared lessons actively. Based on the characteristics of online teaching, they adjusted the slides and all offline teaching resources.
1. The content of the slides was modified and improved, and more guiding animation effects and marks were added.
2. Teachers prepared different kinds of practice activities, including review and reinforce worksheets, enrich worksheets, online quizzes and forum questions. What’s more, they encouraged students to reflect on learning, summarize learning gains and think about future learning plans.
Diverse Teaching Resources Provided to Support Students' Independent Learning
Independent learning is the core feature of online learning. To fully support students' independent learning, teachers in the middle school biology department brainstormed and integrated all resources, including Amoeba Sisters, Crash Course, Ted and other educational and documentary video series, etc.
Collaborative Learning Environment Promoting Learner Autonomy
Independent learning is also inseparable from the guidance and help of teachers. To solve all kinds of problems students might encounter and deepen their understanding of knowledge, activities for them to share learning resources were set up. At the same time, the Q&A forums on the online learning platform and Zoom were used to connect the students and teachers.
Showing Experimental Course Features, Implementing Experimental Teaching
Biology is primarily an experimental science, and thus experiments are very important in teaching biology. During the online teaching period, teachers in the middle school biology department actively participated in creating videos recording teaching biological experiments to enhance students’ understanding of what they have learned.
