Grade 9: Online Assembly

March 18, 2020

Just like last semester, the weekly assembly in ninth grade has started again. Although everyone could not gather in the lecture hall during this period, the enthusiasm of sharing experiences among students has not faded. The speakers this time were Roger and Nikos from 9(10), who shared their experience of participating in the Oxford GlobalMUN.

Last year, from December twelfth to fifteenth, SHSID held the Oxford GlobalMUN model united nation competition. Prior to the main event, all the delegates from our school were trained by the IAA club on campus, and with those patient leaders and trainers, they learned about all the basic procedures as well as materials needed to prepare for this conference. There were a total six speeches prepared, and two position papers written all in a matter of around two weeks before the conference. The students believe that people should spend some more time recognizing different countries’ background and accomplishments. They also learnt to be patient with all of the members as they helped those who had trouble to understand. Finally, SHSID’s two blocs formed together for a big bloc. Though there were intense debates, and strong contenders from the other sides, the SHSID bloc passed the final draft resolution with a two-third majority vote.

The training taught the students basic MUN knowledge while improving their ability with speeches. The pre-session lobbying taught them how to be polite and friendly with others. The sessions further structured their courage and reactions. The late nights working bonded their friendship and built patience. In the end, every delegate had a great experience and was able to learn skills like leadership as well as corporatization and even built new friendships from this conference. Roger and Nikos said it was an honor for them to attend this conference on their own campus, and all of the participants will cherish these memories. Even with the coronavirus, students of SHSID are still keeping up with their diverse activities, and despite the fact that they cannot gather physically, the sharing of these stunning experiences continues.
