Grade 8 Story Buddy Service-Learning Team: Online Activity
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, going to school is no longer available and staying at home meant a change of plans for Story Buddy. It was considered that we would wait until the semester starts and do what we always do, go to the primary section and read stories to the first graders, but we wanted to do something more during this period of time. With the help of our teacher, Ms. Liu, we created a subscription account for Story Buddy and have been updating stories ever since.
While our original intention for this service-learning group was to bring stories to young children during lunchtime, we have a new focus for the subscription account. As WeChat is a particularly wide-spreading social media platform, our audience has changed from not only kids, but everyone. We started redirecting our focus from princess stories to short classics and recorded them into videos to best represent our original storytelling purpose. The original text would be attached so that our viewer can read and listen, making the most of the experience.
We now try to incorporate both Chinese and English stories as well as prose and verse into our readings to create the most variation in our every project.
We have had some struggles with the account, but everything was figured out in the end and there is a feeling of accomplishment. Three times a week, our Story Buddy students record and edit a video along with the text. Sometimes updates come with a short poem or passage tagged underneath, which is also read by our fellow students. Although we only reach out to a small pool of supportive friends and parents for now, it is our goal to bring stories to a wider audience. This is only the start as we have only published a few articles. However, we are working hard to incorporate original stories and poems into the Story Buddy updates. The twenty students in this group all treat this service-learning program seriously and they continue to try their very best to make the most out of our eighth grade experience.
Now that you know more about the program, here is a small promotion for the account:
Subscribe and follow the updates, you will not regret it! And if you are an eighth grader and would like to be a part of the group, the program always welcome any new students!
