Grade 1–3: Celebrate Pi Day in Styles
March 14th of each year is the most eagerly anticipated day for students at SHSID as it is an annual celebration for Pi Day. To celebrate Pi Day, our students will drop their textbooks and regular homework. Instead, they will play games and use math in daily life under teachers’ guidance to explore and experience the great fun of math. For all students not to miss this unique day, Grade 1-3 teachers prepared a feast of Pi via online learning platform. The Pi Day this year is aimed atmaking students more independent and show their creativity.
Our Grade 1 students watched an introduction video about Pi, completed the Digits of Pi Maze and then created a Pi skyline by graphing the digits of Pi using a bar graph format. Grade 2 students completed their online level games and they could even get online rewards according to the rate of correct answers. Besides, they also needed to find 10 Pi objects at home and make a poster to share with others. Grade 3 students finished a harder project at home. They needed to watch videos, do some research on their own, answer all questions on printed-out pentagons correctly and then make a hollowed-outpentagon ball. All activities were catered for our students’ diverse needs. Through the online-offline cooperation, students used different senses to find and solve problems, but more importantly, to fully experience the beauty of Math.
Through the celebration of Pi day, our students have built a better sense that math is closely related to our life. They have also realized that math can be seen, touched, and applied in many ways. Let’s start from Pi day and maintain their passion for Math learning in their life!
