High School Math Department: Pi-Day Online Lectures
To celebrate Pi-day, the high school Math department held three wonderful online lectures on March 13.
Anna from 10(6) introduced the mathematical software Geogebra and presented features such as how to create figures in 3D space, graph functions to explore properties, etc. She ended up the lecture with a wonderful geometric animation in Geogebra. Nathan from 11(4) taught the audience how to use Excel for data analysis and curve fitting. Then, he applied the knowledge of the series to estimate the value of π by two different methods using Excel. The approximation process was very successful. Wendy from 11(1) and Albert from 11 (2) introduced several Latex editors, such as the MiKTeX and Texmaker. In the beginning, they demonstrated how to install the editors. Then they explained how to use the Latex to input mathematical symbols and insert figures efficiently. They also mentioned that this skill will be very important when writing theses or papers in the future.
Online lectures have shortened the distance between student speakers and their audience. The intensive content equipped the students with more knowledge of useful software so that they can better explore and apply math. We thank the speakers for their wonderful lectures.
