8th Grade: Last Visit to the Indigo Workshop this Semester
The semester has ended, and most of the students are off to their well-deserved breaks; however, one group of 8th graders have not yet settled down and have instead volunteered to participate in one last heartfelt gesture towards the special adults at the Indigo Workshop. On January 11th, as soon as the 15 students arrived, they all immediately got to work, moving trays of soap and arranging the tables and chairs. The teacher there started with an introduction to the origins of the program. She said that a lady from Taiwan had a friend who struggled taking care of her autistic child by herself, which is why she was inspired to create a program that taught these kinds of children how to make art and a wide variety of crafts. Their workshop’s specialty is making soap; their soap is made of non-toxic ingredients that are friendly to the environment, such as natural coloring and scents. Although the process of making soap is long and tedious, it teaches them creative skills that require them to grow abilities such as patience and hard work. After her brief but inspirational introduction, the special adults eagerly told the students about their interests, accomplishments, and even their goals in life. Together, they dusted bars of soap, folded the boxes they were to be packaged in, and performed music together. This semester at the Indigo workshop was an experience in an environment of benevolence and joy that moved every single one of the student volunteers and helped them learn how to interact with different kinds of people. The impact was large and taught the students the purpose of service-learning and what it means to serve a community.
