High School Math Department: Open Class Experience Sharing

December 30, 2019

In the afternoon of December 25, the High School Math Department held their second department seminar in the XianMian Building. Mr. Liu Shan presided over the meeting, which mainly focused on sharing open class experiences and technology integration in the classroom.

First, Ms. Yan Jie, a special guest from the Middle School Math Department, shared her open class experience. She pointed out that teachers could delegate more authority to the students by letting them choose their own topics for the learning process, including experimental observation, reflection, and summary.

Secondly, Mr. Hong Miao introduced his open class for the Grade 12 IB course, which was based on finding the best turning route. The class was designed to cultivate students' math modeling skills. In the class, he also used an F1 racing video to gain students' interest. In the 11th grade AP Statistics open class, Director Liu Qin guided the students through the entire process of simulation, observation, conjecture, proving, and generalization. This was done with the help of mathematical software and a graphic calculator to learn the geometric distribution, so that the students could realize the power of simulation.

Then, Ms. Xu Baiting introduced her open class in Grade 10. The topic was the inverse trigonometric functions. The class focused more on enhancing students' knowledge transfer and critical thinking abilities. Meanwhile, students were expected to show respect for the history of mathematics and mathematical symbols. Ms. Li Yulan shared an open class of her geometry course in Grade 9, focusing on how to determine whether a quadrilateral is a rhombus, aiming to cultivate students' critical thinking abilities.

At the end, Principal Ma Feng shared his open class for the Grade 11 IB course, focusing on two main problems: primary school enrollment and the hazardous waste station location. He also summed up all the speeches, stressed the need for teaching to promote enhanced thinking in students, and put forward the concept of "embodied cognition." In addition, Ms. Liu Shan shared her experience of using the Blackboard system to integrate technology in the learning process, especially with the preview process.

All the speeches led to lively discussions. The meeting came to an end with Christmas greetings.
