8th Grade Smile Charity Service Learning Group
Since its founding in 2016, Smile Charity has been passed down to the hands of incoming 8th graders for nearly four years. Each and every generation of members has knitted scarves to shield others from the cold and bring smiles to their faces. This semester, Smile Charity has organized multiple events, both online and offline. Its members are now striving beyond the basic requirements of knitting scarves and putting their efforts into better designs.
On December 13th, 2019, Ms. Xu led the members of Smile Charity to Shanghai Lianying School of migrant workers’ children. Over 40 hand-knitted scarves, as well as more than 400 sets of stationery bought with the charity fair funding, were brought to the school. When they arrived, the sound of chanting was heard instantaneously. Smile charity members then distributed these gifts to the students waiting anxiously. After the gifts were passed out, the smiles on their faces were as warm as spring. Seeing these smiles, group members felt deeply gratified and moved.
Frankly, though the charity did not do much to change the lives of these children, the group members are determined to help those in need and will do whatever they can to bring joy to others.
