Review of Three Competitions in the High School English Department

December 18, 2019

During the first semester of 2019-2020 school year, the high school English Department created many opportunities to showcase student talent.

Poster Competition

October began with a poster competition for which students were asked to recreate the cover of their favorite novel. From Shakespeare’s plays to John Green’s young adult fiction, students clearly embraced the opportunity to recreate an image from a wide range of interesting titles. This contest illustrated not only students’ clear appreciation for literature, but also their creativity and imagination. Students submitted digital and hand designed posters that were then used by the Writing Center in the creation of an eye-catching display. We hope this display will inspire further reading and continue the reading culture already present at SHSID. A huge congratulations to the winners who had their posters printed on canvas bags as a reward.

Writing Competition

October also saw the launch of the creative writing competition, with all students from high school taking part. The competition asked students to tell the story of a particular object, person, or concept and aimed to develop students’ vocabulary and writing craft. Judges were particularly impressed with the diversity of students’ stories and how students used this as a platform to share personal and moving stories. Students also used this competition as a way to make cross-curricular links, with a number of stories incorporating ideas learned in History, Art, and Science. A huge thank you to all students for participating.

Speech Competition

This year, the speech competition was given a unique theme, and in November, students participated in the ‘SHSID Storyteller of the Year’ event. This competition asked students to refocus their creative skills not just on what was being said, but also on delivery and drama. Before the performance, two workshops on public speaking were given to the contestants from English teachers. Students did a fantastic job of bringing their story to life and used props, mime, and pantomime to captivate the audience’s attention. During the competition, students were treated to performances from English teacher Mr. Brian Brady and Drama teacher Mr. Paul Deichmann, who each helped illustrate the excitement of storytelling and how fun it can be! Two competitions took place: one for grades 9 and 10 and another for grades 11 and 12. Both competitions were hugely successful, and students demonstrated fantastic effort and enthusiasm. We extend our huge congratulations to all participants for getting up on stage and trying their best.
