Grade 3 Math: STEAM Activity — Earthquake Rescue

December 17, 2019

An earthquake is one of the most destructive natural disasters on Earth. A catastrophic earthquake can bring about immeasurable loss. Therefore, it is vitally important to conduct a moderate, timely, and effective rescue. On December 11th, in their math class, Grade 3 simulated an earthquake rescue to stimulate students’ innovation and improve their problem-solving skills in real life.

As the bell rang, teachers broadcast breaking news about a magnitude 7 earthquake for students to realize to the severity of the situation. Afterwards, students worked in groups to locate the rescue points on a coordinate grid and work out the shortest and most fuel-efficient route to the rescue point. During the whole process, all students were actively involved, with ideas bouncing off each other as they raced against the clock to be the first team to be rescued.

Guided by STEAM ideas, this subject activity stimulated their interests and fostered their abilities to navigate and be innovative. The students gained better problem-solving skills through their participation in this simulation.
