November 15, 2019

The author of Dog Man, the New York Times #1 bestselling series with more than 13 million copies in print worldwide, came to SHSID!

On November 15,(the 1st day of the China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair )Mr. Dav Pilkey, a famous American children's literature writer, cartoonist, illustrator, and winner of the Randolph Caldecott Medal, joined our students for a new book signing and meeting in the auditorium of the SHSID primary section. This activity was jointly organized by SHSID primary section, SHSID Library and the US Scholastic Publishing House.

Dog Man is the latest creation of comic artist Dav Pilkey after Captain Underpants. His adorable cartoon characters and wonderful and funny stories are loved by children. Kids fascinated by Dog Man even read these stories to their cats and dogs at home. This brave dog not only brings joy to children but also touches elder readers with his courage and wisdom.

During the event, the author and primary school students actively communicated as Mr.Pilkey shared his personal experiences and demonstrated the process of drawing and creating Dog Man. The students wore Dog Man masks to celebrate the character. In his speech, the author shared that he was a child with ADHD, but with constant encouragement from his mother, he overcame his personal obstacle. He then mentioned the three P's: ‘positively, practice and persistence’, encouraging students not to give up. He also mentioned that his first book had been rejected numerous times, and that his series of books would not exist without persistence. In the end, students waited one by one for his signature and took photos with the author. Mr.Pilkey and his wife were also surprised to receive special souvenirs carefully prepared by SHSID.

Through this activity, students of Grade 2 and Grade 3 now understand the full story of Dog Man. Moreover, by learning about the author's inspirational life experience, our student are now even more interested in reading and writing.
