Junior Section Math Department: “Mean, Median, Mode” Demo Class
On October 12, 2019, Ms. Hannah Bush, a middle school math teacher at SHSID, conducted a demo class on the topic "mean, median, mode", which was attended and observed by over ten math teachers.
For each class, Ms. Bush divides the students into groups of 3-4 to conduct homework analysis so that they can identify and correct their mistakes with help from their peers. She first displays her “favorite mistakes” from the homework and then asks students to find and discuss each mistake. Before transitioning to the new content in this lesson, students first brainstormed mean, median, and mode from memory, then shared and further summarized key ideas. Ms. Bush then connected the themes to the real-world by discussing how measures of central tendency are used in teaching, advertising, insurance, and medicine. Students were especially interested in how to apply mean, median, and mode to these four industries. Finally, Ms. Bush had students gather their own data by completing "jumping jacks” and "spinning" activities with a partner. She then asked students to record this data and to calculate mean, median, mode, range, and outliers.
Throughout the class, students were actively involved and engaged, especially during the practical application and activity. They appreciated learning about how statistics is used in various careers, and they enjoyed gathering and interpreting their own data. Not only were students reviewing mathematical vocabulary, but they were also connecting kinesthetic, visual, and numerical skills simultaneously.
