Junior Section Math Group: International Math Modelling Challenge Final Results
The IMMC (International Math Modelling Challenge) oral defense round was held on April 16th and 17th by the Chinese University of Hong Kong department of architecture. Fifty qualified Chinese teams were carefully selected by judges and scholars from all over the world after multiple rounds of elimination. SHSID middle school is proud to recognize five of our teams as first-prize winners and one team as the recipient of the Outstanding Specialist Award.
While the IMMC China round is an independent Chinese competition, it is also the elimination round for the global IMMC. IMMC 2019’s topics connect to STEM subjects, with a particular focus on math and technology, architecture and science, and social science and consumerism. This year, AI technology was introduced as a new category. The Chinese round topics included robot communication and learning processes, navigation system enhancement in mobile phones, self-control systems in online games, and prediction and management of air pollution sources. Additionally, the global round included an ecological topic to encourage reflection on ways to protect and maintain Earth’s ecosystems.
After careful examination and evaluation, four eighth grade students—Lucas, Eric, Jonathan, and Ivan—made it to the oral defense round to compete for the Outstanding Specialist Award. More impressively, they were the youngest competitors to achieve this feat. These four students worked day in and day out for this competition. Despite facing obstacles and setbacks, everyone stayed cooperative as a team and strived toward a common goal. They worked as a cohesive unit and broke up the tasks according to each person’s strength: Jonathan prepared a passionate introduction, Lucas and Ivan delivered well-informed speeches, and Eric nailed his closing statements. Their proficient use of Calculus applications, the Gaussian function, and several other high-level mathematical concepts impressed the judges, enabling them to become the first middle school Outstanding Specialist Award winners from our school. We celebrate their victory and look forward to many more in the future!
