Primary School Subjects Department: Fun Experiment from Great Scientists - “Fanatical Medium for Cleanliness”

On March 25th, 2019, Professor Zhang was invited to the Pudong campus to give a lecture about science. Yaoyang Zhang is a senior research scientist working at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry. His topic was “Fanatical Medium for Cleanliness”.

In our optional class, Professor Zhang introduced the concept of microbes briefly. He mentioned that Microbes can be found almost everywhere on Earth. They exist from the highest mountain peak to the deepest ocean trench. Microbes can be classified into three groups: bacteria, viruses and fungi. Then students were then invited to discuss some issues about the application of the microbes. For instance, whether probiotics or harmful bacteria could be ideal for making yoghurt and that washing hands is the best way to prevent diseases.

Finally, our students successfully collected invisible microbes from keyboards, desks, and fingers. They then turned in their lab dishes to Mr. Zhang. After several days, we may see the microbes multiply in the dishes.
