Middle School Students Win Outstanding Award at IMMC International Mathematical Modeling Challenge

May 21, 2025

It was recently announced that a team of eighth-grade students from SHSID has once again claimed the Outstanding Award at the IMMC (International Mathematical Modeling Challenge), demonstrating exceptional academic prowess and innovative thinking while standing out among over 1,200 high school teams worldwide. This marks the third consecutive year that SHSID middle school students have secured the top honor in this highly competitive event primarily designed for high school students. Not only does this achievement set a new school record, but it also makes this team the first group of middle school students in IMMC history to accomplish a "three-peat" of Outstanding Awards.

Additionally, a seventh-grade team made an extraordinary debut by clinching a “Finalist” position in the regional round and a “Meritorious” position in the international round—a remarkable feat for first-time participants.

As a globally-recognized mathematical modeling competition for high school students, the IMMC aims to cultivate students’ ability to solve complex real-world problems using interdisciplinary approaches. Participants are required to complete problem analysis, model construction, algorithm design, and a written dissertation within 96 hours, followed by a rigorous defense of their work before an international panel of experts. The competition serves as a platform for students to experience the power of mathematics, deepen their understanding of real-world problem-solving, and unleash their innovative potential.

After winning the Outstanding Award during both the 2022 and 2023 academic years, SHSID middle school students once again earned the top prize this year with their exemplary mathematical models, logical reasoning, and academic rigor, achieving the historic "three-peat." This success highlights the effectiveness of the school’s system for developing talented students into top innovators. Through cross-grade project-based learning, in-depth mentoring by instructors, and courses designed to expand mathematical and logical thinking, students have progressively developed rigorous academic standards and a broad innovative vision.

The award-winning students expressed their commitment to further exploring mathematical modeling, delving into interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence and complex systems, and continuing to embody the spirit of independent learning while showcasing the academic excellence of young scholars.
