High School:Achievements in Competitions(April-May)
Since April of this year, SHSID students have achieved remarkable awards in many local and international competitions.
Mathematics
In the past two months, students are attending the Math Knockout competition on campus; meanwhile the students also participated in various types of math competitions and achieved excellent results. In a series of international math competitions held by University of Waterloo, our students performed well. In particular, 11 students won the highest awards. Certificates of Distinction and 2 students won the Medals.
This year, students from the math modeling teams achieved even better results in International Mathematical Modeling Challenge(IMMC)than last year, with two teams of finalists(top 7% in the world)and four teams of meritorious (top 17% in the world) in the IMMC international round ; three teams of finalists (top 9%) and six teams of meritorious(top 30%) in the IMMC regional round. The award-winning math modeling paper of last year’s IMMC was published on one well-known mathematical journal.
As the most influential group mathematics competition in the United States, the American Regional Mathematical League (ARML) attracted many students to participate. SHSID students got one Silver, one Bronze and Regional Top 10 Awards. Among them, the team SHHS3 ranks among the top 100 in the world with outstanding results. The students also experience the fun of team mathematics contest. Finishing 6 rounds of Math League, SHSID has achieve Global No. 4 with total score and five students were on the list of High Score Students.
Economics, Business and Interdisciplinary Competitions
SHSID students also achieved great results in many Economics, Business and interdisciplinary academic competitions.
In late March, in the final competition of China Thinks Big (CTB), one team of G11 students got the innovation runner-up award, the highest award of the CTB competition. The team members looked into the social problem of inefficient sex education bravely and they provided an innovative solution to this problem by creating a simulation game with their outstanding coding skills and creative ideas. Afterwards, another team of G10 students went to the US for the final global round of CTB. Their research about how households deal with their outdated medicines was highly recognized by the professors in top US colleges and finally, they won the highest award in the global round — the global gold medal prize.
In April and May, SHSID NEC teams and USAD teams got their highest scores in the global competitions respectively. Specifically, Stanley Hong, the leader of SHSID NEC team was chosen as the only student representative to be interviewed by CNBC TV Station in New York. Another team of four G10 students attended the SKT investment competition in Omaha. They won the competition, and they were invited to attend the 2019 annual Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders’ meeting.
In late May, two teams of SHSID students went to Beijing and they attended first the International Economics Olympiad Competition held in China. After two days paper tests and case analysis presentations, one team got the first prize and the other team got the second team.
SHSID students expanded their horizons, improved their overall qualities and gave full play to their potential in all these Economics, Business and interdisciplinary competitions.
IT/Physics/Chemistry/Biology
After four rounds of competitions, students won the American Computer Science League (ACSL), and two students in the intermediate and senior teams won the High Distinction and one team of students won the Honorable Award. Many students participated in this year's US Chemistry Olympics (USNCO), 6 students won the gold medals, 6 students won the silver awards, and another 1 student won the honorable award. An American student from 10th grade entered the second round of the USNCO and eventually entered the top 154 honors list. This year, our students participated in the GCSE Physics Challenge & AS Challenge for the first time. They won 3 gold awards, 4 silver awards and 7 bronze awards at the GCSE and AS levels.
In the “Physics Bowl”, which is quite popular among students, a 10th grader ranked 15th in the world in the division 1 with 35 points (out of 40 points), and another 25 students got The Honorable Award. SHSID team's total score ranked the second in the division2.
Among the top 20 teams in China, SHSID sent five teams to compete in the largest academic eco-competition for high school students in North America-Envirothon. SHSID took home Group A’s top three and Group B’s first and fourth place, with the first team from each group qualifying for the North American Finals.
Five members from the Birding Club participated Shanghai Citizen Birding Competition as a team. In the 2 and a half hours of competition time, the team recorded 36 species of birds and won the first place of the competition.
After nearly half a year of preparation, our students won great results in the biology competition. In the Bio Olympiad Initiative USA-China (USABO) they have got 5 gold, 4 silver, 8 bronze awards and in British Bio-Olympiad (BBO), they have got 9 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze awards. These excellent results brought a perfect ending for this year's academic competitions.
Engineering, multi-disciplinary and others
Two 11th graders took their biomedical project to Phoenix, USA to participate in the 2019 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). They stood on the same stage with the best young scientists from all over the world introducing their science work to the experts and judges with confidence, displaying excellent charisma of SHSID students.
In the end, GT Racing won a total of 9 championship trophies, including the third place overall Grand Trophy amongst all US and international contestants.
Many SHSID students participated in the World Scholars' Cup Shanghai regional tournament and several individual awards;as a result of diligent training, nine students were selected into the final round of International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL). The result from Asia Pacific Linguistics Olympiad (APLO) was impressive for the team that has been established for two years, with 2 students winning Silver awards and 3 students wining Bronze award.
