Grades 5-8:Awards of SHASTIC
Don’t think scientific research and inventing new things are privileges of scientists, in SHSID, there is a group of students with scientific minds who spent their spare time on lots of interesting experiments and fascinating researches, worked really hard and did their jobs with care and precision, just like little scientists. They are 5th to 8th graders preparing for SHASTIC (Shanghai Adolescents Science & Technology Innovation Contest). Now, the awards are announced, these students that are really interested in science won honor for our school.

▲ The first-prize winner is introducing his project to audience
In the second half of 2018, lots of students who are enthusiastic in science decided to sign up for the 34th Shanghai Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest. The school arranged teachers to guide and teach students, in which each student was provided with one teacher and outside experts to learn individually, students complete their scientific products or innovations under the teachers’ guidance. Based on their interests, students studied omnibus projects, including projects about engineering, biology, environmental science, and social science.
▲ The student is monitoring ground vibration caused by subway.
▲ The student is operating on a laser cutting machine.
After setting the topics of the projects and introducing them to the teachers, under the guidance of experts from Chinese Academy of Science, students began to do lots of different experiments. Most of them are long-term experiments require patience, care, and precision, which means no mistakes can be tolerated. At the same time with doing experiments, students learned lots of new knowledge, and understood how to research and think scientifically. By analyzing the experimental data, students came up with numerous amazing conclusions. This process of researching is very hard, but students enjoyed it, and tried to be a scientist.
▲ Students are running a biology project in a professional lab.
After the experiments, students did a presentation to report to the science teachers on their progresses, then began to write their paper. Writing a paper is something that students rarely encounter, the students determinedly start from the beginning again and again, learned how to write a paper step by step, finally came up with professional papers.
▲ Presentations for reporting the progress of projects.
When everything is prepared, students submit their projects. After waiting for three months, the awards of the 34th Shanghai Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest are announced, students hard work payed back. Let’s congratulate these students, and hope students can do even better next year!
