Puxi Grade 4：Powering the Future

Recently, Grade 4 students took part in the Power The Future Solar Education Program, which is distributing efficient and affordable solar-powered products to replace dangerous and expensive kerosene lamps in Nepal. On the afternoon of April 25th, 2017, Grade 4 had a guest who introduced a meaningful program that assisted the students in learning about solar energy, energy poverty the effects that Nepal earthquakes had on local children, and generally how they can have a positive impact on another child life.

In order to help the children in Nepal Village, Grade 4 students will make lights named Solmate. A Solmate is a small but powerful portable solar light that is distributed through charities and NGOs to energy poor areas and villages that live off the grid. The lights assist the children and their families to study at night, use amenities in the dark, and lead a healthier life as they don’t need to use kerosene. As we can see, it is a small but powerful life-changing device for village children.

By raising money in charity fair to purchase Solmate lights, children then got to make and assemble the lights at school. On the afternoon of May 3rd, with the guidance of teachers, all Grade 4 students made the lights successfully on their own hands. Most students even wrote letters to Nepal kids and showed their care and love in these letters.

On the following day, all 4th graders gathered at the auditorium to attend the lighting ceremony. They lit the lamp one by one and derived great satisfaction from helping and knowing that they had made a difference; no matter how small or big to another child’s life. We hope our students can change the life of a 3rd world child with their own hands and try to make a difference!
