Middle School: Sports Meeting
Middle School: Sports Meeting
Another school year has arrived, and with that comes the highly anticipated and very much enjoyed annual sports meeting. On Monday October 10th, a record breaking number of students along with their homeroom teachers walked onto the school track, carrying colorful balloons, artistic posters, beautiful signs, and vibrant streamers. In an organized procession, they marched around the track in unison, stopping in front of the director’s podium to perform. This year’s theme was sports, and each class picked one to do a short but very engaging demonstration. There were fencing and basketball routines, mini tennis games, dart practices, and even a bungee jumping performance. A particularly interesting event was class eight and nine’s soccer performance. Not only did they demonstrate how to play soccer, they also invited Director Ni to take a shot at the goal.
After all the classes finished their performance, there came the cheerleading performances. The cheerleaders put on a spectacular show. Twenty to thirty brightly dressed students, some from other schools, performed incredible human pyramids, astonishingly difficult air flips, and a combination of twists, spins, and turns that brought the audience to their feet, screaming and applauding.
Once all the performances had finished and introductions have been made, the real games began. The activities spread all across the field, with one or two teachers and a few assistant coaches managing each competition. There were high jumps, long jumps, and various running contests, such as the 100m race, the 400m race, and the relay. There was also a three legged race, where pairs of students worked together to finish the race without toppling over. That audience loved it. Along with all these exciting activities, there were also ASB members who organized the event and kept the track empty during races, as well as student photographers who were scattered all around, taking pictures of the participants and snapping shots of the audience as they cheered for friends and classmates.
Another highlight of this year’s sports meet was the student-verses-teacher tug of war. In the middle of the track, around twenty students and twenty teachers lined up on their respective sides, gloves on and ready. The game was extremely full of suspense. Watchers on both sides were cheering, clapping, and shouting encouragement. It went on for a several long, tense minutes, and then finally the rope shifted towards the students’ side. Cheers erupted from the audience, and the tug of war ended.
Though everyone wished it could have gone on longer, the sports meeting had to come to an end. But it did not end on a sad note; the sports meeting had not only been about the games and the performances. It also taught an important lesson to all the competitors, as Nike put it: “Success isn’t given. It is earned; on the track; on the field; in the gym; with blood, sweat, and the occasional tear.”
