Grade 11-12: English Speech Contest 2015

On November 25th, 2015, the annual 11th – 12th Grade Speech Contest was held in the School Auditorium. Seniors and juniors gathered during the CAS and enjoyed a competition that was completely different from the ones before – instead of having only one round, a second round where the top four contestants improvised was added.

In the first round, each contestant prepared a speech based on the given prompt. While Standard Level students discussed whom they see as worthy of an eponym, other High Level students explored and gave opinions on what and/or whom they think have captured the Zeitgeist of our current generation. After the first round, those who made it to the second round were given thirty seconds to prepare for an impromptu speech, in which the topics scoped from accelerating a snail to inventing a new holiday.

Also, it was worth-noting that the school invited Ms. Zhang Mengxi, a famous hostess of The International Channel Shanghai (ICS), to judge the competition with other teachers. Before announcing the winners, Ms. Zhang drew from her own experience as a public speaker and encouraged students to value “comfort over confidence,” for confidence can be faked yet comfort cannot.
