What Makes a “Whole Person” — Course Day of Grade 9-10

The 9thand 10thgrade class organized a “Course Day” activity for all the teachers, students and parents recently. The teachers and students gathered together in the Annex auditorium for a very informative lecture hosted by Ms. Liu Min, director of the 9thand 10thgrades, on the academic curriculum of SHSID. On the other day, the parents of SHSID’s 9thand 10thgrade students gathered in the Annex auditorium first for lectures and then the Zhongxing building for a seminar about their child’s future curriculum choice.

From the insightful lecture presented by Mr. Ma Feng, SHSID high school principal, the junior high school students of SHSID got a clearer view on what is in store for them in the coming years. The students were introduced to the wide range of courses, such as the elective courses of 10thgrade and the various AP, IB, and standard level classes in 11thand 12thgrades, like language courses. With a well-developed curriculum system, the students are going to have 57,834 choices for their high school courses. The essence of this curriculum system is a concern for oneself to envision an integrated, whole-person development. It also achieves a balanced and integrated 360 degree approach to growth and wellness. Other than the courses, numerous programs, such as the TA program, were presented. These programs were formed especially to help students dig out their potential, enrich their academic skills, make their own choices and boost their college applications.

Teachers from each specialized area gave detailed descriptions on each elective course and programs throughout the 10thto 12thgrades, so the students would have a vivid image of what to expect in the coming years. During this presentation, Ms. Liu Shan, coordinator of teaching, displayed SHSID’s outstanding academic achievements in standardized tests like SAT1, SAT subject tests and ACT, AP/IB programs, college acceptances and academic competitions. Ms. Zhang Li, college counselor, informed the students and parents about the standardized tests like TOEFL, IELTS, ACT and SAT, summer programs and all kinds of college essay solutions that are provided for students, like the writing center, creative writing courses, and the writing workshop. Ms. Zhang Nan, college counselor, explained different categories of activities that organized for students like students’ organization, clubs and programs. These include public speaking, community service, research, and performances, such as the art festival and talent show, and social event, such as the winter ball. Ms. Cui Mengdi, teacher advisor, discussed the school’s brilliant staff and services, such as course selection consulting and activity participation consulting based on students’ interests, ability, and career plan.

“Course Day” gave all the students information on exactly who and what will be there to help them make their choices easier, and the possible paths for the future. It ended with a thoughtful analysis of what makes a “whole person”, who you are and what you are going to choose for a better future.
