G11: Company Visit

Shanghai Biotecan Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd is a hi-tech bio-pharmaceutical company founded by a group of distinguished Chinese scientists in America. It specializes in the bio-pharmaceutical field with the help of domestic marketing and management. This company focuses on the molecular diagnostics of tumors and other diseases.

Our purpose of this company visit activity is mainly to get a brief introduction to the possible future careers in the field of molecular biology. We have an opportunity to know the working conditions, major jobs, and the current technology of molecular biology. We divided 20 members into 3 separate groups: one group for doing preparatory research and coming up with some basic questions that we will want to ask the company about, one for taking photos during the company visit for documentation, and the last for focusing on summarizing all the notes and information we collect from the company visit to create a formal report to present here.

Once we arrived at the company, Biotecan, the vice manager gave a brief introduction of the company and the general concept of medical biology. The main products and services provided by the company include oncology related diagnostics, high-end health management, bio-informatics service, clinical research, and physical training.

The vice manager showed us how targeted genes are related to certain diseases, which means the diseases can be treated by specific drugs or by radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or other tests. He also showed us their company’s medical cloud on a touchscreen by clicking on specific parts of the human body in the diagram, and on the screen appeared related genetic diseases and respective DNA sequences with targeting drugs and expert doctors of that area.

After the presentation, we were led to the upper floors to look around the working environment and laboratories.

The company visit gave us a deeper knowledge about oncology and the technologies in the field. By providing us this information, by the end of the visit, not only would we have a better idea of what the specific company does in its field, but we would also have more concrete directions and a clearer target to follow if we were interested in pursuing a career in a similar field. It was an informative and interesting trip.

We also visited seven other companies in the second semester. They were Zensun (Shanghai) Sci& Tech Co., Ltd, Hujiang.com, Hippoanimation, Texas Instruments, ATA Group, Kunshan Suntory Co.,Ltd, and Xinshijie Eyes Hospital.
