8th Grade Eco – Fashion Show

The auditorium’s whoops, laughing, and shouting silences abruptly as the first model tentatively tiptoes down the steps. She wears a garment made of turquoise cardboard paper and green fairy dust, with flowing wisps of blue fabric at her shoulders. Many rows of students turn their heads to look at her in silence for a while, and then all of a sudden applause and catcalls erupt from the crowd. She smiles more confidently and sashays down the red-carpeted steps onto the stage of the 2014 SHSID Eco-Fashion Show.

Competitors of the 2014 SHSID Eco-Fashion Show are required to make clothes out of 100% recyclable materials or garbage. There are ten groups, all made of three-consisting of one model and two designers. All are competing for the title of “Fashion Queen” or “Fashion King.” This year, all groups came up with unique designs that distinguished themselves from the previous. One contestant took wild plants and leaves and wove them together into a complicated mass of intertwining vines, creating a very retro, vintage-looking suit for both males and females. Another took white plastic bags and cut out delicate, lacy patterns, which she stuck on a hard mold for a short party dress made for both formal and flair.

The dress had a floor-length black trail that gave the entire outfit a very avant-garde look. The winning group used finished snack bags to create a tight bodice of colorful junk, which flairs out into a ballerina-styled black mesh skirt, emphasizing the light, happy attitude of teenage girls while promoting the idea of recycling everyday garbage.

Behind the gorgeous gowns, beautiful miniskirts, sophisticated suits, and hand-tailored clothing, lied the unity of the students. The whole idea of an eco-fashion show is to promote the awareness of preserving our environment, while finding the beauty in it. Humans march forward with avant-garde designs and the newest I.T. material, but must never forget to take inspiration from those things around us which remain hidden in our everyday lives, for they can be beautiful too.
