Puxi Grade One: Little Kids with Big Hearts

Charity Fair Prelude

Charity Fair is one of the most popular activities each semester. Everyone in the first grade was looking forward to it. The grade one teachers designed a class about the meaning

of charity to help the kids understand that charity fair was not just an exciting afternoon for shopping, playing and filling their stomachs, but also a significant activity for donation to the poor people. Teachers started the class by showing the pictures of the schools in the mountainous areas. When the students saw the pictures of the shabby classrooms, they felt deeply sorry for them. When they learned that students in the poverty-stricken area had to walk several miles to school and only had some cold water for lunch, our first graders’ eyes filled with tears. At the end of the class, they determined that they would do whatever they could and sold as many products as possible to collect money for the poor.

Charity Fair On-site

The long-awaited Charity Fair took place in a Thursday afternoon. Many students and their families were fully prepared for it. Everything you could ever imagine, from stationeries to clothing and accessories, from food to books, could all be found at the fair. It was said that to make their sales successful, one family stayed up late till three in the morning baking egg tarts.

Although our grade one kids are still tiny in shape, they all have big hearts. With the help of parents, some kids called out to sell their products. Others wandered around the fair, picking out and purchasing the things they liked. From this activity, the students understood that helping others can also make oneself happy.

Donations

On Tuesday, November 19th, two students and one parent from each first grade class, along with Ms. Bao, Ms. Zhang from class 1(2), and Ms. DiEgidio from 1(3), visited the

Chang Qiao No. 2 Nursing Home in a community near SHSID..

The reason for their visit was to spend time with the senior citizens that live there and to donate gifts that were purchased with the funds collected from the recent charity fair. Each resident of the home received a goody bag of personal hygiene items. Additionally, SHSID was able to purchase six specially shaped, water-resistant chairs with wheels that the caretakers can use to help the senior citizens shower and do other activities. The children were able to tell the residents about their experience at the charity fair and present gifts to them. It was a wonderful experience!
