Grade 9: a series of activities about “focusing interest”

As the period of grade nine is crucial for the formation of students’ own outlook on life values, it is significant to guide them in a proper way. An effective method is to help students focus interest by a long-term guidance with a series of steps, which stimulate their intrinsic motivation, while promoting the combination between their interest and potential.

The Guidance of “focusing interest” is a vast and complex project composed of multiple categories and systematic levels of activities. During the first semester of grade 9,

we organized a series of activities named “Subject and Your Future” in view of subjects. While during this semester, we took an in-depth look at the Physics and Chemistry lab building of Fudan University based on the theory we got last semester. The students visited the campus of Fudan University first and appreciated the grandeur and simplicity of European architecture. Then, in the lab building, a lot of modern precision instruments were presented. To our surprise, some students even asked various professional problems based on a combination of theory and practice after a close watch on the instrument. Characters of different subjects like physics, chemistry and biology as well as related career development in the future were introduced in detail by science teachers. Meanwhile, similarities and differences between experimental sciences were presented through the visit of labs of different area with various constructions.

On the other hand, we organized a series of activities named "Career Day" under the full support of parents engaged in different occupations of careers like art, cultural transmission, venture capital investment, insurance, architectural design, urban planning, new energy resources, education and medicine. The activities involved two parts: "lecture" and "consulting". It provides an opportunity for students to explore what quality, ability, and character are required out there in the work world, and to combine existing courses with future choices by experiencing both academic and social practice. Based upon this, an important homework during this summer vacation is to complete a "career survey” report by interviews and field trips. In the coming grade 10, we are going to visit different companies with various backgrounds to allow students to delve into in a real professional environment, and to enhance their understanding of social careers.

All in all, as the beginning of high school, grade 9 is an important period of “formation”. With the help of a series of long-term guidance, we encourage students to focus interest, to combine existing courses with future choices, to stimulate their intrinsic motivation of studying, and to help them develop positive attitude towards studying by experiencing both academic and social practice.
