Puxi Grade 3: Reading Program
Puxi Grade 3: Reading Program
This year, our third grade student has taken part in a program to encourage their reading of English books. This program, called Scholastic Reading Counts, is an American program designed to help students read at their level and to choose books wisely according to their interests and abilities.
The students who have been diligent with this program have seen their reading level increase dramatically. Many students that began the year at a second grade reading level are now reading at a late third grade level, that an incredible increase! Not only have those students become more skilled in their reading, but they have also improved their spelling and grammar significantly. It has been proven that there is a link between reading level and grammar and spelling abilities, and these students certainly show that connection.
Reading is a great way to foster curiosity as well as fulfillment in a student’s spirit. Students who are curious have a desire to learn; and students who read are able to fulfill that desire on their own. This is a great accomplishment for children who are only eight and nine years old. They are able to learn on their own without a parent or teacher telling them what to do.
Most parents have seen their student’s reading in the home. Our teachers are grateful for those parents who allow their students the time to read without interruption. Studies have shown that good readers are better students in the long run, and we know every parent wants their student to be successful.
We hope our child’s reading is a habit they will continue. The third grader teachers encourage every student to read as much as they can about any topic that interests them. Not only will they gain knowledge, but they will become better at language as well. Congratulations to those students who have reached their 30-book goal for the year. It is well-deserved.
