"Shang Zhong Cup" Piano Competition
2012 Shanghai Students Single Category Art Competition –
“Shang Zhong Cup” (Secondary) Piano Competition
Organizer: Shanghai Educational Center of Science and Art, and Shanghai High School
Competition purpose:
First, to enhance the artistic quality of middle and high school students, and to enrich campus cultural activities and exchanges,
To stimulate creative expression in secondary school students by infusing musical training via piano education, and
Third, to stimulate secondary school students to inculcate a passion for playing piano and improve their overall musicianship.
Participants:
All middle school and high school students in Shanghai studying piano (including overseas students) are welcome to participate and compete.
Registration Time: May 13 - June 5
* Students submitting applications past the date of June 5 will not be considered for participation in the competition.
Competition time: Early July, TBA
Venue: Shanghai High School, Jing'an District Youth Activity Center
Competition:
Preliminaries:One piece or musical excerpt chosen by the student.(5 minutes or less)
The Semi-Finals:
1 – One piece or musical excerpt chosen by the student (6 minutes or less)
*This piece may be the same piece as the preliminary audition piece.
2 – The student will be given an incomplete melody. They will be asked to the accompaniment and complete the melody using basic musical theory techniques. The student will be given 10 minutes to prepare their improvised song and their performance should take between 1 and 3 minutes.
Final:
1 - One piece or musical excerpt chosen by the student (6 minutes or less)
*This piece may be the same piece as the preliminary/semi-final audition piece.
2 – Improvisation. The student will be given a picture for which they will have to create a melody and harmony. The student will be given 10 minutes to prepare and their performance should take between 1 and 3 minutes.
(Note: Before the Semi-Finals and Finals the Organizing Committee will hold a seminar at Shanghai High School to assist students in understanding the requirements of an outstanding winning performance. The seminar will include a discussion about how to improvise and accompany simple melodies.)
Awards:
The organizing committee will recommend some outstanding students to be awarded the gold medal(s), silver medal(s), and bronze medal(s). These students will receive awards based on their performance abilites as well as their improvisation skills.
Two additional certificates will be awarded to notable outstanding students with excellent improvisation and performance skills.
Finally, noteworthy students will be recommended to accredited performance venues and professional musicians in the Shanghai area so that they may continue to display their impressive piano abilities throughout the greater Shanghai area.
