June 5, 2025

With a sincere heart for China, the students and teachers of Shanghai High School International Division’s Puxi Campus, Grades 4 and 5, meticulously prepared a cultural feast under the theme "Enchanting China, Loving China." This performance served as a cultural journey through time, allowing the audience to hear echoes of history in traditional and contemporary rhythms and feel the warmth of Chinese civilization through songs, dances, and musical performances.

Poetry Recitation

The showcase began with a choral recitation of classic Chinese poetry. Grades 4 students delivered a vivid poetry recitation. Each line painted a vivid image of China's majestic landscapes and rich culture, guiding the audience across mountains and rivers to admire the beauty of the land.

As graduating students, the Grades 5 expressed their love for SHSID and pursuit of dreams through original poems such as The Four Seasons of Longmen, Where Dreams Begin, and Chasing Dreams at SHSID, Staying True to Our Hearts. Their rendition of Hello, Tomorrow was filled with clarity and hope, resonating with youthful aspirations for the future.

Mothers of students from Grades 4 and 5 also joined their children on stage, performing Seaside Morning Song, We Stand Atop the Mountain, and In Spring, I Recall.... The emotive voices of parents blended beautifully with the clear and innocent tones of their children, creating touching portraits of heartfelt connection and warmth.

Tea Culture Showcase

During Chinese Culture Week, Grades 4 students embarked on a flavorful journey into the world of tea, gaining deep insights into tea culture. In their performance A Tea Dialogue Across Time, they brought these learnings to life. On stage, historical figures like Lu Yu and Su Shi appeared to guide the audience through the delicate art of tea-making and the elegant scenes of ancient literati savoring tea and discussing philosophy.

Students from the Netherlands, Peru, Japan, Italy, and Australia also shared stories of tea traditions in their own cultures and how Chinese tea has inspired and evolved globally. This was more than just a tea performance—it was a dialogue between civilizations, revealing the beauty of cultural exchange and sketching a picture of harmonious diversity.

Historical Drama Performance

At the beginning of the semester, students in Grade 5 students immersed themselves in China’s rich history and, inspired by the idea of “time travel,” wrote, directed, and performed an original play. The audience followed them on a journey through the grandeur and elegance of the Tang Dynasty.

After weeks of meticulous writing, planning, and filming, their creative works finally came to life on the big screen. Debating Wu Zetian in the Tang Court and Dreaming of the Tang—Ink and Elegance featured imaginative storytelling and a deep respect for history. The performances sparked laughter and awe, bringing the Tang Dynasty vividly to life.

Interviews with cast members revealed their passion for the creative process. They gained a deeper appreciation for the beauty of calligraphy and the rewards of collaboration and persistence. Their success was also supported by parents, who provided valuable inspiration and resources.

Elegance in Tradition

When traditional arts meet the modern stage, a transcendent aesthetic dialogue unfolds. The classical dance Lotus on the Silk Road revived the splendor of the ancient Silk Road, while the duet Orchid Pavilion Gathering showcased cultural refinement. Performances like Folk Tunes from Yunnan, Yi Dance Melody, Give Me a Rose, and Pastoral Song—featuring piano, pipa, and violin—offered glimpses into China’s colorful ethnic heritage.

Fourth-grade students also performed the Peking Opera, adorned in splendid costumes and demonstrating elegant movements. Their dynamic performance earned waves of applause, breathing new life into this traditional art form.

In parent-child acts like Wild Geese and Song of the Pipa, families shared the stage to present heartfelt interpretations of cultural legacy and connection. Pieces like Daylily and Soul of the Sword reflected students’ reflections on life and dreams. The grand finale, a chorus of Treading the Rivers and Mountains, featured all teachers and students, bringing the atmosphere to a rousing climax.

Soul of Huaxia

To conclude the showcase, the street dance group performed Huaxia, blending modern street dance with traditional Chinese elements. Their vibrant rhythms and dazzling choreography presented a fresh, innovative expression of Chinese culture, embodying the dynamic spirit of today's youth and the evolving brilliance of Chinese civilization.

The classical dance team also stunned the audience. Every gesture and smile conveyed the elegance and charm of traditional Chinese dance, beautifully merging classical heritage with youthful energy.

Enchanting China, Loving China—through poetry, song, dance, storytelling, and drama, the students and teachers brought the richness of Chinese culture vividly to life. Each performance was like a delicate painting: landscapes painted in verse, civilizations infused in tea, ancient-modern dialogues on stage, warmth passed down in parent-child recitations, and the echoes of tradition resounding in music. These moving moments reflected the students’ deep love for Chinese culture and allowed it to shine with renewed brilliance through both inheritance and innovation.
