When Hydrogen Meets Oxygen — Chemistry Comes Alive Through Practice

June 13, 2025

On June 11, 2025, 11th-grade students from SHSID visited Qingneng Co., Ltd., a national high-tech enterprise in Shanghai that specializes in hydrogen fuel cell technology and water electrolysis for hydrogen production. This visit, which bridged “hydrogen energy technology” with “chemistry learning,” offered students a firsthand encounter with cutting-edge green energy equipment. Through lectures and on-site observations, they deepened their understanding of electrochemical principles, fuel cell mechanisms, and advanced materials for clean energy, bringing real-world relevance to their chemistry studies. During the tour, students engaged in active discussion on the structure and operation of fuel cells. They connected classroom concepts, such as galvanic cells, electrode reactions, electrode potentials, and the Nernst equation, to real-world applications, exploring how hydrogen undergoes oxidation and oxygen is reduced within a fuel cell. They examined energy conversion processes, the role of proton-exchange membranes, the flow of electrons through external circuits, and how innovations in material science can enhance efficiency and stability.

Many students remarked afterward, “We've studied hydrogen reactions and electrochemical cells in class, but today we truly saw how these concepts step out of the lab and power trucks, generators, and transport systems in the real world.” The experience inspired a newfound interest in pursuing future studies in chemistry, materials science, or renewable energy engineering.

Through this enterprise visit, students bridged the gap between academic knowledge and real-world engineering applications. Abstract electrochemical theories were transformed into tangible energy solutions. The experience underscored the power of interdisciplinary learning: using their feet to trace the pulse of technological progress, and their minds to witness the translation of scientific knowledge into industrial impact. This visit significantly enhanced the students' scientific literacy, engineering mindset, and spirit of innovation.
