"Go China" Journey: Exploring China in Sanming, Fujian

June 27, 2025

Exploration is an instinct etched into human DNA, and what drives us to traverse mountains and seas, constantly pushing our limits, is a willpower as strong as steel. This strength may stem from an insatiable love for knowledge, an unwavering dedication to challenges, or a heart-stirring anticipation of the unknown—always propelling us forward on the long road of growth, overcoming obstacles with courage. On June 20, 2025, students from SHSID's "Go China" program embarked on a five-day exploration trip to Sanming, Fujian, carrying this passion for discovery and beginning a remarkable journey of profound dialogue between knowledge and nature.

The journey began as the students arrived in Jianning, renowned as the "Hometown of Chinese Jianlian Lotus." Stepping into Xiuzhu Heyuan, they were instantly enveloped by the breathtaking sight of endless lotus fields unfolding like a magnificent painting. Wandering through the fields, they not only immersed themselves in the dreamlike scenery but also actively participated in traditional lotus seed cake-making. By the Bagua Lotus Pond, they observed the growth stages of the lotus—from its roots silently anchoring in the mud, to its leaves swaying gently in the breeze, and finally to its blossoms radiant under the sun. Each detail deepened their understanding of the profound ecological concept of "harmonious coexistence between humans and nature."

Leaving Jianning, the students hurried to the Minjiangyuan National Nature Reserve, heading for the summit of Jinrao Mountain, the highest peak in Fujian. Along the way, the rare flora and fauna seemed like a feast meticulously prepared by nature. The students observed their behaviors up close and listened attentively to the guide's explanations about the workings of ecosystems. From photosynthesis in plants to the hunting and nesting habits of animals, each piece of knowledge filled them with awe and admiration for the wonders of biodiversity.

At Dajin Lake, the students embarked on an exploration of the water-carved Danxia landforms. Geological marvels like Ganlu Temple and Yixiantian appeared as masterpieces sculpted by nature, leaving the students speechless with amazement. Strolling along the lakeshore, they carefully examined the unique textures and shapes of the Danxia formations, as if listening to nature recounting tales of geological transformations spanning hundreds of millions of years. Here, they also engaged in in-depth exchanges with teachers and students from Taining Danxia Experimental School. Through these conversations, they learned that the formation of Danxia landforms is a prolonged and complex process involving crustal movements, weathering, erosion, and other factors, and they came to understand the critical importance of preserving these landforms for maintaining ecological balance and passing on geological heritage.

On the Shangqing Stream, the students floated downstream on bamboo rafts. The crystal-clear water and the verdant mountains on either side formed a flowing landscape painting. Amid the gentle ripples, they felt the tranquility and beauty of nature, as if merging with it. Next, they delved into the geological study of Zhaixia Grand Canyon. Walking along the canyon trail, they experienced firsthand the evolutionary process of the landform—from steep cliffs to deep gorges—each feature recording the dramatic changes wrought by nature over time.

For the final stop of the five-day journey, the students visited Yubang Village in Shaxian. Here, they learned about the remarkable evolution of Shaxian street food, from humble street stalls to an industrialized and scaled-up culinary phenomenon. From initial handmade preparations to today's standardized production, and from a limited variety to a rich and diverse menu, every step of Shaxian snacks' development embodies the dedication and ingenuity of countless individuals. The students also rolled up their sleeves to try their hand at making the snacks—kneading dough, wrapping fillings—each step brimming with fun. As they savored the snacks they had made themselves, they appreciated the unique charm of a local culinary culture that thrives through innovation while honoring tradition, bringing this meaningful journey of exploration to a perfect close.

The "Go China" exploration journey not only broadened the students’ horizons but also enabled them to gain valuable growth through practice:

Alfred: "This journey was of great significance for a Grade 10 student like me. It provided an opportunity to learn about the professional and rich geographical knowledge and local customs of places like Taining, Fujian. It expanded our perspectives as international students, deepened our understanding of the world around us, and connected us with Sanming through wonderful travel experiences."

Sophia: "Over the five-day journey, we moved from the elegant lotus culture in Jianning to the biodiversity of Jinrao Mountain, from the magical Danxia landforms of Dajin Lake to the geological marvels of the canyons, and finally embraced the vibrant food industry of Shaxian snacks. Conversing with nature and learning from the earth along the way, we marveled at nature's craftsmanship and grasped the profound meaning of "harmonious coexistence" in the interplay of human culture and ecological wisdom."
