Puxi Campus G1&5: Walk Together at Sports Week
October brought crisp autumn air to the campus, and with it came Sports Week at Shanghai High School International Division — eagerly anticipated by students and teachers alike. On October 15, a heartwarming "Three-Legged Walk" unfolded: our youngest learners from Grade 1, paired with their Grade 5 buddies, set off, side by side, on a journey filled with laughter and quiet understanding.
One Strap, Two Partners, a Bond Built Step by Step The rules were simple: each pair gently tied a strap around their adjacent thighs, chanted "One, two, one, two" in unison, and moved forward together. Easy as it sounded, it took genuine teamwork and perfectly matched rhythm to make it work. The fifth graders naturally slipped into the role of "little coaches." Some crouched down to fasten their younger partners' straps and adjust them with care; others leaned over to demonstrate the rhythm again and again, counting softly under their breath; and some simply slowed their pace, keeping a watchful hand close to their little companion. The first graders, for their part, started out cautious, clutching the hems of their shirts — but before long, smiles broke through and their voices rang out, loud and clear, as they wobbled forward, unsteady yet utterly determined.
Together, the Truest Spirit of Sportsmanship On this day, there was no chasing after speed — only the joy of moving in harmony; no keeping score — only the simple pleasure of playing together. The beauty of the Three-Legged Walk lay not in how fast a pair could go, but in whether two people were willing to slow down and adjust their steps for each other. Step by step, the children learned to wait for one another and move at each other's pace, always with a partner in perfect step beside them. When they reached the end of the course, every pair high-fived and beamed at each other. That, in essence, is the message of Sports Week: give your all, cheer for your partner, and savor every step taken together — for that is what truly matters.
The Teachers Join In: A Special Moment of Fun Before the children's laughter had even died down, the gymnasium reached a new peak of excitement — the Grade 1 and Grade 5 teachers teamed up for their own lighthearted Three-Legged Walk. The teachers, usually standing at the front of the classroom, were now all arms and legs, laughing together. The children transformed into the most enthusiastic cheerleaders, shouting encouragement at the top of their lungs as the gymnasium echoed with laughter and cheers. This special moment was not about getting ahead but about having fun together — the teachers demonstrated the spirit of sportsmanship through action: dare to try, join in with joy, and take everything in stride with a smile. Watching their teachers try so hard with such good humor, the children laughed until they doubled over — and quietly learned that sports, after all, can be pure, simple fun.
Laughter: The Sweetest Note of the Day Inside the warm gymnasium, the children's rosy cheeks and beaming smiles were the most heartwarming sight of this autumn day. The little ones looked up at their older partners with wide, admiring eyes, while the fifth graders bent down to gently take those small hands in theirs — as if catching a glimpse of their own younger selves in that eager gaze.
A short route brought two grades together and sparked a lasting friendship; a chorus of cheerful calls echoed the harmony of walking side by side. On this day of Sports Week, our students carried home far more than the joy of a fun activity — they carried a companionship that knows no age, and the quiet conviction that when we walk together, we walk farther.
This cross-grade activity is a vivid embodiment of the October Character and Moral Education theme "Sportsmanship" at the SHSID Middle and Primary School. Through collaborative challenges and mutual support, the students felt the power of respect, inclusiveness, and teamwork, deepening their understanding of sportsmanship and enabling character education to nourish their minds amid sports.
