Into the SHSID Classroom, A Conversation on Teaching and Learning with AI — The Annual Visit of Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Thailand
In the golden days of October, a delegation of students and teachers from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School (MWIT), Thailand, arrived at SHS as scheduled, continuing the annual exchange between the two schools. During the visit, the Thai teachers and students stepped into SHSID classrooms and learned alongside our students. This year the exchange also reached beyond the classroom into a conversation between teachers, who discussed norms for the use of AI on campus and how AI can empower teaching and learning; the visiting teachers were also invited to our High School Professional Development Day.
In the G10 Honors Biology class, mixed groups of students from both schools explored osmosis and osmoregulation through two cases of increasing depth, analyzing water balance and homeostasis in cells and presenting their conclusions to the class.

In the AP Language class, students scored a peer’s weekend essay with the AP argument rubric and then defended their grades before the class — their arguments made the case that honesty beats flattery. Feedback was candid yet generous, and the room stayed buzzing with positive energy.

AP English class
In the G10 AP PreCalculus class, a “Function Factory” brought operations on functions into an interactive web page: a built-in library generated functions and operations at random, and trap questions pushed the discussion of domain ever deeper, so that students mastered the four operations, composite functions, and domains through play and instant feedback.

In the G10 PBL 3D Art and Design class, students chose a campus building and moved from sketch and measurement to three-dimensional modeling, using Boolean operations to carve windows and doorways and decimation to shape irregular forms; the visiting Thai students also completed their own architectural models.

Beyond the classroom, teachers from both schools shared practice at their own schools on the norms for AI use on campus and on how AI can empower teaching and learning, and candidly exchanged questions and reflections. The visiting teachers were also invited to the SHSID High School Professional Development Day, where they studied the newly released SHSID 2.0 AI Usage Guidelines (Teacher’s Handbook Edition) with our faculty and joined the immersive, hands-on AI co-creation segment of our teacher learning workshops. For them it was a move from observing lessons to learning alongside colleagues; for our faculty, a sharing of SHSID’s exploration of AI in teaching and a chance to test it against outside perspectives.
The annual gathering has become a shared appointment for both schools. The foundation of mutual understanding and trust only deepens. We look forward to meeting our friends from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School again next autumn.
