Lin'gang Campus: Exploring the Pheasant Park: A Journey of Nature Study
With the crisp autumn air, it is the perfect season to embrace nature. Recently, students from Grades 1 to 3 at SHSID Lin'gang Campus stepped out of campus and visited Shanghai Pheasant Park (Mother Pheasant Farm), embarking on an autumn study trip full of rustic charm and laughter. Here, the children combined observation, listening, interaction, and hands-on practice, fully unleashing their childlike joy under the blue sky and clouds, and harvesting the most vivid knowledge outside the classroom.
Exploring Nature: Observing Lively Pheasants and Attending a Science Talk
As soon as they arrived at the farm, the children were immediately captivated by the colorful and graceful pheasants. Gathering around the enclosures, they carefully observed the birds' magnificent feathers and unique postures. With the teacher's explanation, the children learned an interesting fact: biologically, pheasants are classified as birds, which differs from the poultry we are familiar with.
Later, the children entered the Pheasant Science Museum. Through vivid rubbing pictures, they learned about the classification, distribution, and origins of pheasants. The museum also featured a meticulously designed simulated pheasant habitat, making the children feel as if they were in the wild. After the tour, an indoor talk on chick rearing began. The park instructor explained the secrets of egg incubation, chick hatching, and daily care in detail. The children listened with rapt attention, raising their hands to ask questions from time to time. From seeing to listening, knowledge naturally flowed into their hearts.
Close Interaction: Feeding Goats and Feeling the Warmth of Life
Driven by curiosity about the animals, the children headed to the feeding area. Here, they transformed into gentle little zookeepers, holding fresh leaves out to the baby goats. Watching the goats stick their heads out and chew gently, the children felt both nervous and excited, truly experiencing the joy of interacting with animals.
Hands-on Practice: Harvesting Vegetables and a Bumper Egg Hunt
The highlight of the autumn trip was undoubtedly experiencing the joy of harvest firsthand. Walking into the green vegetable fields, the children learned how to harvest properly under the guidance of the park staff. Squatting down, they grabbed the roots and pulled hard, pulling out plump heads of vegetables. Although their hands were covered in dirt, as they held their freshly picked vegetables, they excitedly chattered about having an extra dish at dinner tonight.
Next up was a "treasure hunt in the grass"—an egg-picking activity. Bending over to search carefully through the grass, every egg they found was met with gasps of delight. Everyone not only enjoyed the thrill of the hunt but also received two real pheasant eggs to take home and share the autumn joy with their parents.
Fun Extensions: Lawn Games and Bean Collage
At lunchtime, the children spread out picnic mats on the lawn and sat in their groups to enjoy lunch. They shared their food with one another, filling the air with laughter. After lunch, the children proactively cleaned up all their trash, taking practical action to protect the beautiful natural environment.
After a short break, the expansive lawn became a natural playground for the children. They enjoyed a variety of lawn games: a hula hoop relay that tested their teamwork, a thrilling wheelbarrow relay race, and a highly reactive game of "Blossoming Peach Flowers" that was filled with laughter. Embraced by the blue sky, white clouds, and green grass, the children ran and played freely, overflowing with joy.
After running to their hearts' content, the children settled down for a creative craft session—the bean collage. Using beans and rice grains of various colors, they pieced together images of pheasants on paper boards. With their boundless imagination, unique color palettes, and creative shapes, lively and adorable "bean pheasants" came to life on the paper.
From the thirst for knowledge in the science museum to the sweat shed in the vegetable fields, and from the gentle act of feeding the goats to the unrestrained running on the lawn, this autumn study trip perfectly blended nature with the classroom. As the sun set, carrying bags full of vegetables, two pheasant eggs each, and countless joys, the children boarded the return bus, keeping the wonderful memories of this autumn day close to their hearts.
