Exploring the "Chinese Ruler" in the Nanoworld

October 29, 2026

On October 27, Professor Deng Xiao from the School of Physics Science and Engineering at Tongji University was invited as a guest speaker for the "Pursue·Excel" series lectures at the SHSID Science Fair. In the Xianmian Building Annex Auditorium, he delivered a hardcore yet engaging frontier popular science lecture titled "Forging a Chinese Ruler for the Nanoworld."

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Deng traced the history of metrology. He introduced that from ancient weights and measures to the establishment of modern scientific systems, metrology has always been the cornerstone of human civilization and technological development. As frontier technologies enter the micro era, traditional measurement methods can no longer meet the demands; as human exploration steps into the nanoscale, nanometrology technology has emerged. Subsequently, drawing on his own research experience, Professor Deng explained nanometrology technology to the students in simple terms and highlighted the critical role of precise measurement in the nano-manufacturing. The research achievements he shared during the lecture were awarded the First Prize of the 2025 National Science and Technology Progress Award.

This lecture opened the door to microphysics and nano-manufacturing for the students, igniting their passion for exploring frontier technologies and experiencing the charm of science. SHSID has always hoped that through rich and high-quality academic activities, students will have the opportunity to get closer to frontier technologies, maintain their enthusiasm for exploration, and grow into youths of the new era with innovative thinking.
